My new disbelief

I want to start disbelieving people.

Not because of what they say, but..

because they are unbelieveably fake.

Something I forgot to tell Serena

I was reading on isotopes until my small eyes weakened, nodding away. So, I scavenged through my small and yet FULLY OCCUPIED table for a bookmark. Then, I came across this...

I was trying to recall who spelled my name wrongly on this lovely 'Green' card. And suddenly, my mind came clear. And I got freshened up instantaneously. So, I started writing... a long conversation.

Last summer, I wanted to know more about one of the climate event happening in campus. I approached this sweet petite girl. Serena is one of the lucky Hong Kong student who got selected for those highly publicised Antarctica journey for university students. A westerner was right behind me when we both stepped in the booth.

I : Hi! This looks interesting to me.
Serena : Hi! Take a look at our campaigns. And the information on the posters.
W : [smile]
Serena : Hey! Do you know what's Climate Change? Have you heard about it? Let me show you here.
W : ok. [looking away fidgeting under the hot sun]
I : [a bit shocked but still manage to smile]

So, Serena was elaborating big time about her adventure in Antarctica with her new friend W. I stood next to her fancy Mac and listened as she explained hyperactively to W all about the Climate and the disastrous changes taking places. Then...

Serena : You can register here if you wish to know more about us.
W : Ok.
Serena : Thank you, W!!!
I : Erm, hey Serena, what's that registration about? Can you tell me more?
Serena : Ok. Just register your details here. [smile, i think it was]
I : Can you show me the English language?
Serena : [puzzled] Ok...
I : Unfortunately, I don't know how to read Chinese [smiled and continued with registering].

W was leaving. So, Serena scribbled something on a card.

Serena : Hi W, this is for you!
W : Thanks.
Serena : What's your name?
I : Teng T-E-N-G. It goes double.

Serena wrote my name on it. First looking at it, and then looked away while writing the one behind. That explains the picture above.

Serena walked away and 'sent' W off.
I went over and told her you got my name wrong. She just asked my name again and then, took her pencil and 'erased'.

I : Thanks [smiled]
Serena : Welcome!

Serena,
THANK YOU for giving me the card.

I am grateful.

You don't have to remember my name,
but I think, you have to remember yours...

I'm relieved over the spilt milk

MY STORY
NT is my PhD advisor. And DM is my partner in research cum colleague cum office roomate cum a too friendly friend from China.

MY FEARS
Harassment is a serious offence. Especially if it knows no end.

MY APPROACH
I've talked in person with NT. She's clearly concerned with what happened to me for the past 11months. And she asked a lot of questions. She said that she would handle the problem, but she needs a little bit more time to figure things out. I talked to her in detailed how every incident happened. She's now informed why I dont work in the office, and why I am always working alone.

HER CONCERNS
She explains her respect for cultural values. And she asked me not to give up my own culture in order to blend in with the rest of the world. Having cultural differences is one of the values needed in a multicultural society, this I was reminded of.

Evidently, she is not satisfied with DM's progress at all. She felt that he's immatured, non-competent and lost. He doesnt seem to know what is going on around him and he is one against the whole world. She agreed that I have been babysitting him all the way and she's very upset about it. She had previously sent an email to him, complaining about him not being able to produce anything to her effectively. This is not my concern at all. Im not the right person to judge him.

However, she brought up another aspect that clearly is not agreeable to me. She said that DM maybe so immatured and lost, he might not be aware he had done wrong or not realizing how fragile woman are. I defended by bringing up the pool incident last year. She was shocked jaw drop. Then, all her defenses for DM collapsed.

HER SOLUTION
NT had asked for me to be transferred to another office, if that's agreeable to me. I gladly accepted the offer. She advised me to speak up loudly and clearly and not being afraid to hurt his feelings. And she hoped that I can voice out more to her, and she's concerned [I'm not sure how much though..] with the amount of things I am keeping to myself.

MY FEELINGS
I am suddenly overwhelmed with how things changed overnight. Not knowing what to feel, I had mixed feelings of joy, confusion, anger, betrayal, sympathy, satisfaction and relieved...

MY HOPES
But one thing Im sure of, I've become more determined in succeeding my PhD.
I might have carried on too much of responsibilities in me. Struggling hard to persist all way through. And over-achieved the impossibles. I have not know those abilities are actually mine. Im glad, I acted on instincts. Im glad, Im my father's daughter.

Because I am the fighter.

I hope I am still sane.

Food poisoning from school's canteen

Being stucked between heaven and earth, is not something to be proud of. I think the above and the below was indecisive, so they chose to dump me back on solid grounds.

A night's ordeal with i-lost-count-of-diarrhoea and vomitting had scared me enough of the food in the canteen. I swear I woke up in a coffin at one point. Can't thank Alex enough for rushing me to A&E early in the morning. Carrying me from one point to another. Holding me so tight fearing that I'd just break into pieces. Nanny-ing me. Worrying until her face turned white.

Well, that was me. And it is over.

School's canteen is supposed to be operated at their best. So many students and staffs are depending their 'eatinghood' on them. This is not my first encounter with the hygiene issue there. I was once 'served' with a barbed wire garnished in my vegetables.

Why must they take things for granted? What if the same thing had happened to their dearest ones?

Sigh... HK just executed their murder plans on me...

China : an unpaved path

China is in a transition phase : The economy, the society, the government.

As the most populated country in the world, ranking 1st as the largest ASIAN country and 3rd/4th [highly debatable] largest country in the world, China strived to be one of the most recognized civilisation around the globe. All eyes are set on China for each initiated move. A reckon force, she managed to maneuver the global market in her direction.

She is transitioning so fast that there are so many flaws accompanying her alongway. The nation might be financially prospering after literally 'dropping' their communist regimes and aiming hard in achieving a wealthy nation. Dissecting extensive railways and highways through mountains and valleys. High rise soars to dictate her status quo. The doomed miners buried deep in minings. Enforcements are dictators : no arguements, no human rights, no pleading, no excuses. A series of suicides in a row. Kidnapping kids of rich families. Pirated items have elevated to a higher standard of establishing nationwide stores. Secondhand goods are sold as brand new branded products. This is how 'hard' their mentality had to struggle to breathe. Choking up money-making-plans in each possible way.

This is the genuine China I came to know.

But, generally, the level of development in the people's mindset, is not equivalent to what their nation is going through at the moment. The capacity for intelligence, is corrupted by status, mind, power and money.

China, you traded your people with money.

No matter how high economy flourishes and wealth spilled on her people, China's money does not reach out to the poor. The poor remains poor and the rich becomes richer. In the midst of rushing to thrive, the people have ununttered sense of sticking to their same old attitude. The rude remains ruder at times. The vulgar has exteme vulgarities at times too. Gender biases; males are given the lead, because they pay the bills.

Chinese woman's mentality... not what I'd be proud of.

And I learnt, no matter how right you can be, customer is not always correct, unless, money is in power. However, having a different skin colour do make a difference. Expats to them are worshipped like GOD, just like anywhere else in Asia. This how downgraded our people have done to our humble region.

Asians, 'we' helped others rape our modesty.

Gaining from its counterparts - Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan [strongly questionable], China is very opportunistic and I personally salute the planning and development team of experts. They must be gobbling in a whole lot themselves. Business they say, belongs to the chinese. How true? Very. That's why they are making money.

Right now, the dense chinese population are left to struggle with the handicapped system. I wonder, how do they play along this game call survival of the fittest?

Not being respected as a chinese, being despised of my cultural background and brewed from a 'non-chinese' [as they claimed] country, I no longer have the sense of belonging for where my ancestors had originated from. Well, gaining a bird's eye view of this massive turnover, the experience is above priceless.

China, I feel for you. And, you have a long way to go.

Abuse is not about tolerance

While you SCREAM at your woman, there's a man wishing he could talk softly in her ears. While you HUMILIATE, OFFEND and INSULT her, there's a man flirting with her and reminding her how wonderful she is. While you HURT your woman, there's a man wishing he could make love to her. While you make your woman CRY, there's a man stealing smiles from her.

I was going through FB when I saw this status message updated at one of my friend's page. It sounds so saddening for me to feel for my peers.

Domestic violence is a form of violation of one's rights. It is legally defined as,
Any abusive, violent, coercive, forceful, or threatening act or word inflicted by one member of a family or household on another can constitute domestic violence.

Why are we being victimised ?
Why does gender inequality exist?
Why is our vanity being criticised?
Why must we be bullied for our soft sides?
Are we always taken for granted, for our motherly nature ?

If only...
every man can appreciate how woman exist alongside with man, our role in this world would be more justified. We do not need to struggle so hard just to prove our point.

If only...
every child is given priority over their innocence. They would not have to struggle to survive another day.

If only..
everybody care more for their mental health, social interactions, genetic influences, marital problems, family planning and etc. Children and woman would not have to wonder why must they repeatedly suffer blows to their head, broken ribs, swollen eyes, scalded arms, fractured skulls, cigarette burnt skins and unwanted pregnancy.

We planted our faith in people that we trusted most all our lives, and being disappointed by it, is the last thing we had hoped for. Unfortunately, we have to wake up from the worst of all calamities. We might be scarred for life, but we are tired of being fearful, bullied and underestimated all the time. We have to realize our values and existence in this life. We are not born to take blows or being humiliated of our innocence.

And I know, it takes up a lot of courage and determination to say,

'Enough is enough!'

My first four seasons

End of Summer...

Autumn...

Winter...
Spring...

It's Summer, again...

I once stated in my FB :

I'm made for summer... shaped for autumn... built for winter... refining in spring!

And I still think, I shine best at Summer.

How time flies...

Snatch thieves

The headline featured in TheStarOnline reminded me of the latest on the scene that happened right in front of my eyes. My mum and her friend just got into their car outside my house. I was sitting on the front porch with Coffee, when suddenly I heard a roaring motorcycle outside the gate. I turned my back just to witness a thief with a sharp pointed knife banging on their car parked outside. Both mum and friend was trapped inside, luckily mum's instincts told her to lock the door. That thief has got a 'look-to-kill' kind of expression.

I was frantically shouting for help and my sisters ran out shouting as well. But, that was not enough to stop the most determined thief. He never even paused for a second, but keep pounding on the helpless folks in the car. Mum was too blur and frozen to make another move. The rider standby on the side of the car, prepared for escape. Only until my brother-in-law rushed out with keys, the thieves gave up and rode off.

The pillion thief climb steadily onto the bike, and paused to look at us before speeding off. The criminal stare continued until he lost sight of us....

His intention was real, to snatch with grievous hurt.

Life seems so fragile at this instance. I wonder what gave them the outstanding courage and bravery to 'perform' crime?

Though the moment was frantic, it is really important to remain sane and functional. My utmost concern was my mum and her friend's safety. But, there was nothing I can do. We called police, in the end, the feedback was as simple as rubbish and inefficiency. They wouldn't care more if there's nothing stolen and nobody was hurt. They do not even want to patrol the area.

End of story - Polis Diraja Malaysia Boleh!!!

At times like these, we should always be reminded to take good care of ourselves and our belongings. In Malaysia, it is not really that safe.

Please reflect, what can we do when we are being snatched?

Or,

When people around us are being snatched?

Or, most importantly,

When people you care about are snatched?

Trust me, it is scary. Because Malaysians don't care, let alone the police.

Dogs dumped at deserted island

Lately, news spread around that dogs from Pulau Ketam [Ketam Island] was dumped in an isolated island a few kilometres away. This was highlighted in China Press on 30th April. I wonder if anybody can share the plights of the news with me here?
I might not be the best person to be informative, but I can spill some of the milk based on the best info available to me. The animal rescuer who saved the first dog brought him to our veterinary centre. He was too frightened, skinny to the bones, cold, shivering, extremely hungry and thirsty, dehydrated and shabby with dirt all over him. Most shockingly, was his hollow stares. He just lay still in the cage for as long as I've remembered.
She shared her experience with us during her first rescue mission to that island. The island is unhabited by humans or other pet animals. So food is scarce and barely even available at the mangrove forest. According to one of the fisherman who helped in the rescue operation, some of the dogs even feed on their own kind because there's no food for them. Yes, it is survival of the fittest for them. Meaning, these dogs were dumped there and actually leave to die.
There was no intention to ferry them back to Pulau Ketam, at all....
Villagers from Pulau Ketam cramped those dogs into a wooden box to be ferried over to the deserted island. They stuffed as much dogs as they could into the fitted box to make lesser trips over the distance. Can you imagine, initially, there were up to 200 dogs straying around the island? I wonder what happen to the huge lot, now that there's about 10 of them left in desolation...
Several newspapers are covering the news, do keep an eye on the papers this week. I hope that all of you would try to understand the seriousness shown in the attempt to save the dogs from rotting to death one by one. It is undeniably remarkable how your understanding can contribute to the dog's welfare as I'm saying this.
We can always speak on their behalf, it matters just what we are trying to deliver.

What a mind opener?!!!

Hey guys, I'm finally back! Look what interesting read I've stumbled on upon coming back from Australia! So interestingly reported in the nst.com.my, I figured it must be catchy to have it posted in here as well! I can't resist to miss out this good one, how could you?

Malaysia certainly Boleh!

Valentine's Day 'haram in Islam'

JOHOR BARU: The state Religious Department yesterday reminded Muslims here that Valentine's Day was haram in Islam. The fatwa had been declared in 2005, but the warning, said Mufti Datuk M. Tahrir Samsudin, was the department's yearly reminder to Muslims not to engage in un-Islamic activities. He said such celebrations "involved elements of vice" and violated Islamic tenets and values. He said the Christian elements found in the celebration also did not correspond with Islamic practices.

Hmmm.... be careful when you're walking down the streets on the 14th.... oh wait, does that apply to Chap Goh Meh [psst, the chinese valentine version] as well??

"Please, don't put me to sleep..."

*BEWARE! This post is not recommended for weak hearts*

Today was "the" day I did not cry when I would, normally...

This afternoon, a man walked in our clinic and asked for veterinary assistance as his dog was injured from a freak accident. The nurses helped to carry the wounded dog into the clinic for immediate medical assessment.
The good dog obediently let us assessed and manouvered him around although he was surely in a pityful and yet painful state. Neither did he bite anybody nor he bark at anyone of us. The faithful dog did not even let out a squeak.

The dog's hind leg was crushed revealing flesh and a generous view of broken bones. He suffered cuts and bruises here and there. He was in a serious condition needing more than just a vet's consultation. His badly damaged leg needs to be amputated.
And so, the veterianarian gave the owner 2 choices.
  1. Save the dog's life [inclusive of medical fees]
  2. Put the dog to sleep [inclusive of cremation]
As for the figures, it was just RM200 difference between the two options. The owner chose the second choice. He chose to end the dog's life. Instead of paying to save his life, the owner opted to pay for him to sleep.

The reason?
He said he had only kept the dog not long ago.

The atmosphere fell apart and silent prayers ensued for the lovely dog. The owner left upon his request to terminate the dog's life. Often, they do not realize how difficult it is to put them to sleep. The hardest part was for us to do it and to see him go...

As for the dog, I think he said,
"Please, don't put me to sleep..."

Blog Action Day : Skyrocketed food crisis

What does POVERTY, FAMINE, POOR, DISEASE and MALNOURISHED have in common?

They are brought about by economic rundown in their respective countries leading to food crisis and poor health status. Countries like Zimbabwe and Africa have been setting the clear cut examples being the center of poverty and famine since decades ago. Food is available in Africa. It’s just that, the people could not afford to buy it. Thus, many Nigerians eat weeds just to keep themselves from starving to death. Same fate falls upon the Haiti people who are feeding on mud as their staple diet.

What happen in the first place?

Lands fertile for farming and plantation were claimed for development, uprising demands for food for world’s growing population, change of weather (drought/flood), crops attack by pesticides etc. Some of the world’s rice production collapse unable to compete with new technology (i.e. Haiti). Illegal trading of harvested crops by traders to wealthier countries. Debts by poorer countries (i.e. Africa) and inflation. Mass urbanization of farmers into cities. [Source :
celsias]

What are the consequences?

In these poorer than poor conditions, they couldn’t afford for food, what more to spare any money on healthcare? Diarrhea, malaria, AIDS, dehydration, malnutrition and many kinds of other diseases strike this community of poverty-stricken people. [Source :
guardian.co.uk] Hygiene might not be generally practiced by poor people and children are often the victims of the dirty environment.

What is the concern?

The outburst of war, bioterrorism, food fraud and danger of facing famine worldwide. At the hi
ke of the food prices and global economic redundancy, it is feared that food availability is doubted. Even if it is available, people may not be able to purchase the food. When prices of food shoot up the market, poorer ones could not hold on. More than 100 million Asians are expected to suffer from hunger misery due to the rise of staple food – wheat, rice, soya, maize since March 2007. [Source : Asianews]

The existing natural resources are not sufficient to sustain the entire world’s population. Let's face it; the food crisis is inevitable. And China’s melamine food crisis might just be the lesson to be learnt. Perhaps focus on the ongoing debate about
GMOs??

I try to blame the internet for being out of service, thus rendering the delay of my entry.

Mongoose drowned in cages

Disastrous effects of flood in Kuala Lumpur.

KUALA LUMPUR: Flash floods following a downpour resulted in a massive traffic jam along Jalan Bangsar heading towards Brickfields yesterday evening.

Among them was an exotic pet shop, where carcasses of mongooses lay motionless in cages. From the watermarks on the wall it was obvious that the floodwaters had risen and drowned the creatures.

Poor thing. This is heart-wrenching. Enough to cause a tear. I cannot help but imagine how they were stucked in small wired cages, screaming their heads off, begging to be released, jumping up and down watching the water level rise, mercilessly get sunken along with their pretty hefty 'coffins'.....

These are pictures of mongoose normally traded as exotic pets for their dare-devil abilities to capture snakes and rodents.

Exotic wildlife trade. A necessity? To whom it may be?

Yes, I have always been against animal trade and captive breed. If you really want to keep an animal, might as well adopt from shelter and nurture them for good. To encourage disruption towards nature's ecosystem is something man should not interfere with.
Enough is enough. Treat each life on Earth with respect if you expect some from them.

"They are sooooo cute."
"These creatures are so adorable."
"I wanna have it because I had always dreamt of one."
"I don't care, I'm buying!"
"Well, they are only animals, who cares??!"

STOP WILDLIFE TRADE!

I care, that's all that counts.

I can't believe my eyes!

I felt as if I wanted to get out of here the instant I finished this seriously distractive paragraph.

GEORGE TOWN: If people vote out the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) and Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) tomorrow, then their communities will no longer have a voice or representation in government, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi cautioned yesterday. [read more]

Cautioned?? What do you mean by caution? Why caution us, the minorities? It is either the newspaper should be more conservative of their vocabs or, there should be another speaker, speaking for us.

Malaysia survives for all of us, regardless of the colour we are born with. If you are the leader, you should be caring for us too. Should we choose a leader who discriminate other races rights in Parliament? It is time to change.

The General Election-Part 2

I find it ridiculous when our government wanted more advance lifestyle in the country whereby the citizens can barely keep-up with the current livelihood. Especially when you have been loitering around in the east coast long enough to see into the citizen's pain.

So what if your people chose a sedentary lifestyle?
So what if they like it the way they are?
So what's the big deal if they prefer a secure government service?
So what if they felt that the current federal government is an intruder?

this is quoted directly from the article. I guess it must take a lot of courage to say this :-

He said cost of living was low before but most Malaysians did not have water, electricity, cars and other facilities.

"Now most Muslims can do the haj. People have cars and enjoy other facilities. Prices have gone higher because quality of life has improved but we are managing the country well," he said.

Monsoon cup, Crystal mosque, Praying in the space, upgrading PDRM quarters, airport extension, 62 mosque project in T'ganu state, indoor + outdoor stadiums, declaration of heritage waterfront city, Visit Terengganu 2008, East Coast Economic Region (ECER) and much more.

With mega projects more to come, it is as if money pouring down the drains... Do you think the rakyat had wanted all these? All this not only bereaved them of their family income but rather a subtraction due to increase in taxes and prices of essential goods. Trying to make them poorer?

What about approaching the poor ones at rural areas? When to provide them help and guidance with establishment of Yayasan, Kebajikan and other welfare system? Why is poverty still an issue in Malaysia that was said to have their quality of life improved? Why are the health services still at the bottom?

A heritage city with an abandoned shopping complex, poor transport services, a closed-down cinema and the stadium, airport is still under major construction?? I bet little would know about the abandoned and poorly-maintained museum at the corner of the city which is said to be the largest in Malaysia!!!

Don't show development by building sky-high buildings for nothing. It took more than four years to come out with rapid growth signs all of a sudden. Will it take another 5 years for history to repeat itself?

The General Election - Part 1

I normally don't blog about politics, not that I'm not interested, but I had rather keep it to myself. Politics are sensitive for a general discussion-many would get offended and some would even start a boycott if I were to write about it!

I read this statement on the NST this morning, [please read up]

"He is already tired when it comes to providing services and not interested in serving (the people), so what is the benefit of electing him?"

I was actually shock and taken aback [once again] with the lame propagandas that government chose to torment their opposition. How could you be the least factual commenting about work done by others? List down your true achievements compared to the oppositions. Shameful! Winding about others just like a spoil kid desperately wanting a lollipop. Better still to comment one's self-achievement and tell the people what had been helpful to them all these years.

You sure know that the oppositions never get things they wanted the easy way. Be it financially, economically and socially, they are incomparable to the monopolizing government without the support of the citizens.

Yet, they had never stop their gesture to voice out the pain of their people
-because they felt it too....

Don't be deaf towards the needs of our people,
Don't let the unseen coloured your perceptions,
Don't be irresponsible and neglect your responsibility,
Don't stop looking for the answers to so many uncertainty,
Don't portray an ignorant part of you,
Don't trust any statement made, before digging up the truth,
Don't be blinded with religion at influence,
Don't cheat or lie,
Don't do it because you are eligible,

Don't disappoint the future generations.

Dead Turtles Washed Ashore

Leatherback hatchling making its way towards the ocean.
Copyright : National Geographic

It is really bugging conservationists on the increasing numbers of dead turtles washed ashore just recently. We have already put
leatherback turtles population at stake and now, the hawksbill and green turtles' future are in jeopardized state.

Read on, please?

Malaysia, being one the major nesting sites for the turtles have suffered an adverse effect of decreasing nesting turtles in recent decades.

Why we end up at this alarming state?
Copyright : Greenpeace
Copyright : Heal the Bay - The Pacific Protection Initiative
Copyright : NESCB

Should we blame it on development?
  • Where land reclamation has long gone its boundary and claim the nest of these poor creatures on sandy beaches. Pollution and rubbish dumping had made it difficult to sustain the turtle population. The leatherback turtles feed on jellyfish and they can easily mistaken plastic bags as their food source because of the similarity. Please take a brief moment to consider to manage waste disposal and help others understand why is it important to do so. Use less plastics and opt to say NO to plastics.

Should we blame it on fishing activities?
  • Where illegal and destructive fishing method are still in practice. The government had not been dynamic in updating their portfolio to track and take legal actions against those who violate fishing laws. Trawling and ghost fishing often causes these slow-moving turtles to get entangled in the fishing lines. Cyanide bombing not only caused damaging effects towards coral reefs but also, the corresponding community in the ocean. The thought that our ocean is a big basin being capable to dilute and dissolve all chemicals in it are SO SO WRONG!

Should we blame it on the local community?
  • Where some people here are ignorant and continue to consume turtle's eggs. Believing that they have virility properties made it more sought-after. Being near to these nesting shores, they have direct access to steal eggs after these poor mothers laid their eggs (>100 per nest depending on species). This leads to uncontrollable amount of poaching activities. In the past, it is still sustainable to eat their eggs when the nesting turtles are abundant.
But now......

Should we blame it on the public?
  • People are not fully aware of the current happenings taking place here. These turtles are important as a part of the ecosystem - losing them causes a huge alteration in the ocean food chain. That's really NOT GOOD. Have you all heard of TAMY (previously known as SEATRU)? Maybe you should all consider chipping in to help these turtles while you still can! You won't know how long more that we are fortunate enough to sight them.

Should we blame it on the government?
  • Although the turtle endangered issue had been brought to the attention of state government to govern a rule to ban selling of the turtle eggs, the journey seem endless. Perhaps they are not even trying to apprehend the issue of losing one of nature's most valuable creatures. One of the reasons - the local community consume turtle eggs like how normal people eat chicken eggs daily. If they had been concern enough to make a stand and protect these tourist attractions treasures, we would not have to see what's happening to them these days.

Didn't we all just witness the signs?

Spread the word.
